Wisconsin's Big Cheese 107.9

Here at Big Cheese 107.9, we’re always buzzing with the energy because of the magic of radio. But August 20th holds a special place in our hearts – it’s National Radio Day! A day to celebrate the incredible history, the enduring power, and the personal connection we all share with the airwaves.

National Radio Day commemorates the anniversary of the first commercial radio broadcast in the United States, back on August 20, 1920. For over a century, radio has been our constant companion, delivering news, entertainment, comfort, and connection. From the crackling sounds of early broadcasts to the crystal-clear digital streams of today, radio has evolved, but its fundamental role in our lives remains strong.

Speaking of connection, we were absolutely thrilled to receive an email recently from the wonderful activities director, Karl Kiefer at Dimensions Living in Stevens Point. He inquired if Big Cheese 107.9 would be open to hosting some of their residents for a visit in honor of National Radio Day. Our answer was an enthusiastic YES! We believe in the power of radio to bridge generations and create unique experiences, and we were eager to share the inner workings of our station with some of our community’s treasured senior citizens.

At NRG Media, we’re passionate about showcasing the wonders of radio to people of all ages. It’s a fascinating world behind the microphones, and we were delighted to welcome residents Jane Hartman, Dave Koch, Larry Kurtz, Mary Feltz, and Lolly Kraft from Dimensions Living. The studio was filled with a palpable sense of excitement as they arrived, ready to experience the magic firsthand.

During their visit, Jane, Dave, Larry, Mary, and Lolly got the full Big Cheese experience. They toured our studios, saw our soundboards and microphones up close, and learned about the process of putting a radio show together. But the real highlight? They each had the chance to speak on the air!

With a little guidance from our team, and the simple push of a button, Jane, Dave, Larry, Mary, and Lolly became instant radio stars. Their voices filled the airwaves and shared a few good laughs with our listeners. It was a heartwarming experience for everyone involved, and a true testament to the power of community and connection.

National Radio Day is a reminder of the enduring power of audio. It connects us, informs us, and entertains us. And as we saw firsthand with our wonderful guests from Dimensions Living, it also has the power to create special moments and lasting memories. No matter your age, you’re never to old to become a radio star!  Listen below.
