Billy Joel’s motorcycle shop, 20th Century Cycles, in Oyster Bay, New York, is closing down after nearly 15 years of showcasing his personal collection of bikes. Joel is closing the shop and auctioning off his collection due to a brain disorder he has been diagnosed with, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.
The shop was opened in 2010 to maintain and repair Joel’s motorcycles, restore and customize bikes, and showcase his collection for the public at no charge. Joel aimed to promote an aesthetic and bring foot traffic to downtown Oyster Bay through the shop, which became a popular stop for motorcycle enthusiasts and tourists.
The auction date for Joel’s collection has not been set, but the shop has been open on recent weekends selling remaining motorcycle parts.
