A well-known etiquette specialist is turning heads — and sparking debate — by insisting there’s a correct and incorrect way to eat a banana.

While most people casually peel and bite into the fruit without a second thought, William Hanson, often referred to as Britain’s top etiquette authority, believes the process requires utensils.

In a recent Instagram video titled, “This really is the only way you should be eating a banana,” Hanson demonstrates his refined method: sitting at a table with a fork, knife, and a neatly placed banana on a plate.

“We don’t peel it like a monkey,” Hanson begins, clearly ready to challenge conventional banana-eating habits. “Instead, we use cutlery. Start by slicing off one end, then the other, using the knife turned sideways. Score the peel lengthwise, fold it back, and eat neatly with your fork.”

The clip quickly went viral, garnering over 200,000 views and more than 40,000 comments — many of them amused, baffled, or downright outraged.

One viewer sarcastically wrote, “What kind of lazy, no-good servants do you have that they didn’t PRE-PEEL your banana before serving it?! Ridiculous!”

Another chimed in, “Bruh, you just offended the whole planet.”

Many social media users appeared frustrated by Hanson’s implication that people have been eating bananas incorrectly their whole lives.

“This has to be trolling,” one comment read.

Hanson’s banana tutorial isn’t his only foray into fruit etiquette. He’s also advised on how to properly consume grapes — instructing that they shouldn’t be plucked and eaten individually, though that particular lesson didn’t provoke nearly as much controversy.
