What started as a routine trash collection route in Milwaukee turned into a life-saving rescue thanks to an unlikely twist of fate.

Back in April, City of Milwaukee sanitation workers Naz Nalls and his partner Omar were making their usual rounds when something highly unusual happened. As they prepared to empty a garbage bin into their truck, the bin unexpectedly fell off before its contents could be dumped and crushed.

“Usually, it don’t fall off. That’s what’s crazy about this. I feel like it was kind of destiny,” Nalls said.

When the workers looked inside the fallen bin, they were shocked to discover a severely malnourished dog buried beneath the trash. The frail pup was clearly starving, with visible ribs and signs of neglect, but despite everything he had endured, he remained friendly and eager for attention.

Following protocol, the crew contacted their supervisor, Alex Halverson, who happened to already be on his way to check on that specific team. The bond between Halverson and the dog was immediate.

“The first time I pulled him out of the garbage can, he let me pick him up,” Halverson recalled.

Seeing how hungry the dog was, Halverson offered him the two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches he had packed for lunch.

“He didn’t even chew. He just inhaled,” Halverson said.

Knowing the dog needed immediate care, Halverson contacted the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) and personally drove him there. The dog received medical treatment, nourishment, and was placed in foster care while he recovered.

Over time, the dog’s transformation was remarkable. He gained weight, regained his strength, and never lost the friendly personality that had captured everyone’s hearts.

As fate would have it, Halverson had already been considering adding a second dog to his family. When he was given the first opportunity to adopt the rescued pup, the decision was easy.

“So, a dog who can persist and still trust people. He hasn’t met a single person he doesn’t want pets from. Just made me feel like that was kind of the one,” Halverson said.

Halverson officially adopted the dog and named him PJ in honor of the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that helped comfort him during those critical first moments after his rescue.

Today, PJ enjoys the love, safety, and companionship of a forever home. What could have been a tragic ending became an inspiring story of second chances, all because a garbage bin unexpectedly fell off a truck at exactly the right moment.

Sometimes the smallest twist of fate can change a life forever.
