If you felt a slight shake – or even a disturbance in the space-time continuum – at about 11:46 p.m. CT on Wednesday, you weren’t imagining anything. That’s when an asteroid tore through Earth’s atmosphere as it plummeted toward the planet.

That’s the word from the European Space Agency, which says the 3-foot space rock was headed for the Philippines but burned up before it made impact.

Nevertheless, the sight of the asteroid has scientists beside themselves because actually spotting one this small is extremely rare, according to the ESA. At least one lands on Earth every two weeks, yet Wednesday’s asteroid was only the ninth astronomers have actually gotten to observe before it burned up, per the ESA.
