Is there anything more rock ‘n’roll than stealing your own album and giving to a drug dealer? Billy Idol did just that 40 years go.
He told the story in an interview with The Guardian. During a dispute with his record label over the Rebel Yell cover photo, Idol snuck into the studio, stole the album’s master tapes, and gave them to his heroin dealer.”
He then told the record company “This guy I’ve given them to, he’ll have them out on the street bootlegged in a couple of days if you don’t change this picture.” And they relented.”
Idol is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Rebel Yell this year.
