Weaver D’s And R.E.M. Still Automatic After Thirty Years

By Greg Oct 14, 2022 | 3:21 PM

Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods in Athens Georgia inspired R.E.M.’s 1991 album title “Automatic For The People”   released 30 years ago this month.  The album was the follow-up to their 1991 album “Out Of Time” and featured such R.E.M. classics as “Man On The Moon,” “Everybody Hurts,” and “Nightswimming.”  As described by drummer Bill Berry: “The record was a nine month metamorphosis, it went from being a caterpillar to being a rat, to being a dog to being a chicken.” The album took  almost 13 months to complete and was recorded in Woodstock, New York, Athens Georgia, New Orleans, and Atlanta and the string arrangements on the album were made by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin who was a fan of the band. R.E.M. was on hiatus from touring (the band didn’t tour in support of their previous album “Out Of Time”) and didn’t tour in support of “Automatic For The People” as well. Happy 30- year anniversary to R.E.M.’s “Automatic For The People” and A big shout out to Dexter Weaver, owner of Weaver D’s in Athens, Georgia celebrating 36 years of good down-home food and unmatched hospitality!
