McDonald’s is know today as only having one mascot. However, in the 80’s and 90’s Ronald McDonald shared the spot light with a cast of characters. From Hamburgla, my favorite tbh, Mayor McCheese, Birdie the Early Bird, Officer Big Mac and Grimace.
For years many people, myself included, have always wondered what in the world is Grimace. Well we now have our answer thanks to a manager of a McDonald’s franchise in Canada who shared the story behind Grimace.
Brian Bates, a manager of a McDonald’s franchise did an interview with CBC News and reviled that Grimace, the purple pal of Ronald McDonald and one of many happy meal characters is wait for it…a taste-bud. That’s right Grimace is a giant taste bud and his purpose is to show the food tastes good.
Well this revelation has all of us as perplex as the next. Until now McDonald’s hasn’t shared a lot about Grimace’s origin other than this 2014 tweet below.
.@margo_padilla Great question! #Grimace lore says he is the embodiment of a milkshake or a taste bud. What do you think? #AskAnArchivist
