May the Fourth Be With You

May 4, 2021 | 11:32 AM

Much like the JT memes of “It’s Gonna Be May.” May 4th has become a big day for Star Wars fans around the world. As today is the unofficial holiday for Star Wars. Why May the 4th? Well it has to do with a line from the film that is used among Jedi’s and the Rebel Alliance. First uttered by General Dodonna in 1977 Star Wars: A New Hope and used throughout the franchise ever since.

Fun fact about the phrase ‘May the 4th Be With You‘ it was actually first used in 1979. Not by Star Wars fans but by the U.K. Conservative Party who paid for a newspaper ad saying, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie.” Who’s Maggie, well that would Margaret Thatcher who not only was victorious in becoming the Prime Minister of the U.K. but also becoming the first female Prime Minister in the country, according to Gov.uk.

.

As for Star Wars fans, well we didn’t start using the saying to celebrate this day until about a decade or so ago. Like anything in today’s society the internet and media coverage has created a social media loop and “May the 4th” exploded much like Death Star I and II.

Today is about fan calibration, memes on social media, pictures of us at Disneyland next to Kylo Ren, R2-D2 & CP-3O or even Chewbacca. It is a day for us to sit on the couch and binge-watch every Star Wars Movie, wear our favorite Star Wars t-shirt and to even hit up our socials and post like crazy.

Even Disney is celebrating “May the 4th” with the release of Star Wars: Bad Batch which follows Clone Force 99. Which by the way I’ve already watched this morning and loved every minute of it! You will to, especially if you were a fan of Star Wars: Clone Wars because it is a direct extension to that, Episode one kicks off with Order 66 and the effect it has on Clone Force 99. The other Star Wars related show that dropped today is a Simpson’s themed show called “Maggie Simpson In: The Force Awakens From Its Nap.” Which are both available now on Disney+.

I’ll leave with this awesome cappella tribute to Star Wars that Jimmy Fallon, The Roots and the cast of “The Force Awakens” did on The Tonight Show in 2015. May the 4th Be With You Always!
